Guide
How to remove silence from a video
Recordings are full of gaps: the pause while you find the next slide, the breath before an answer, the ten seconds of nothing at the start. Cutting them by hand in an editor is slow. Remove silence finds every stretch below a loudness threshold and takes it out, leaving a little padding so the speech still sounds natural. It works on video and on audio-only files.
Steps
- 1Open Remove silence and drop your video or audio file.
- 2Press Analyze. The tool scans the audio and shows how many silent stretches it found and how much time they add up to.
- 3Adjust the loudness threshold if needed. Lower it if quiet speech is being cut; raise it if background noise is being kept.
- 4Check the preview: the tool keeps a short margin around speech so cuts are not abrupt.
- 5Press Remove and save as MP4 (video) or MP3 / WAV (audio).
Picking a threshold
- Screen recordings and tutorials are usually quiet between sentences, so the default works well.
- Interviews and podcasts have natural pauses you may want to keep; be conservative and check the result.
- Recordings with room noise or a fan need a higher threshold, or the noise is treated as speech and nothing is cut.
Check the result before you publish
Automatic cuts are only as good as the threshold. Scrub through the output once. If words are clipped, lower the threshold or increase the padding and run it again; the original is never changed.
Silence removal is not jump-cut editing
The tool removes stretches of near-silence. It does not remove filler words, repeated takes or mistakes, because those are speech. Use it as the first pass that makes a recording shorter and tighter, then do any real editing on the result.
Audio files work too
The same tool handles MP3, WAV, M4A and other audio files, which makes it a quick first pass for podcast episodes, voice memos and interview recordings. Save the result as MP3 for sharing or WAV for further editing.
Privacy
Every tool runs in your browser, so your files never leave your computer.
Questions
- Will it remove background music?
- No. Music is above the loudness threshold, so sections with music are kept. The tool is designed for speech recordings.
- How much time does it usually save?
- It varies. A talking-head recording typically loses 10 to 30 percent of its length; a screen recording with lots of thinking pauses can lose more.
- Does it work on MP3 files?
- Yes. Drop an audio file and save the result as MP3 or WAV.
