Guide
How to resize an image for Instagram
Instagram crops anything that does not match its aspect ratios, and it re-compresses everything. If you upload the right size to begin with, your photo appears the way you framed it and loses less detail. These are the sizes that matter and how to hit them.
Steps
- 1Open Social media resizer and drop your photo.
- 2Select the Instagram formats you need: square post, portrait post, landscape post, Story or Reel cover. You can pick several at once.
- 3Choose Crop (fills the frame, trims the edges) or Fit (keeps the whole photo, adds a blurred or solid background).
- 4Drag the preview to choose which part of the photo stays in frame.
- 5Download. Each size is saved as a separate JPG.
Instagram image sizes
- Square post: 1080 × 1080 (1:1).
- Portrait post: 1080 × 1350 (4:5). Takes up the most space in the feed.
- Landscape post: 1080 × 566 (1.91:1).
- Story and Reel: 1080 × 1920 (9:16). Keep text away from the top and bottom 250 pixels where the interface sits.
- Profile picture: 320 × 320, shown as a circle.
Crop or fit?
Crop looks native and fills the screen, but you lose the edges. Fit keeps every pixel of your photo and pads the rest; the blurred-background style is common for landscape photos posted as portraits. For a carousel, use the same choice for every slide so they line up.
Keep the quality up
Instagram re-compresses on upload. Give it a sharp 1080-pixel-wide JPG at quality 90 or higher and it has less to degrade. Avoid uploading tiny images that get scaled up, and avoid giant images that Instagram scales down with its own, less careful, resizing.
Carousels and consistency
A carousel uses one aspect ratio for all slides, taken from the first image. Resize every slide to the same preset before uploading so nothing gets cropped unexpectedly. The same goes for a grid: a feed where every post is 4:5 looks far more deliberate than a mix of squares and landscapes.

Questions
- What is the best size for an Instagram post in 2026?
- 1080 × 1350 (4:5 portrait) for the most screen space in the feed, or 1080 × 1080 for a square. Both are supported.
- Why does Instagram crop my photo?
- The feed only accepts aspect ratios between 1.91:1 and 4:5. Anything outside that range is cropped to fit. Resizing to one of the standard sizes first avoids it.
- Can I resize for several platforms at once?
- Yes. Social media resizer has presets for Instagram, X, LinkedIn, Facebook, Pinterest and YouTube; select as many as you need.
